Every labour and delivery journey is different and every mother has her own way of approaching the experience. This is going to be the birth of my second son and so not only have I been through the experience once, but I have also done ALOT of reading and watching other mama's to be videos. And so I think it would be fair to say I know what I need & want in the hospital
(This list is accumulated according to my personal experience and does not reflect every mothers birth plan or list).
Like I said, every experience is different and so before I get into my list, I think it would only make sense to give you an idea of what my birth plan is.
(This is my plan, but from my first experience I know that there is a possibility that plans change.)
Birth Plan
During Labour
Position during contractions: I would. like to be able to move around during my labour, to help reduce tension and find positions that will reduce pain naturally (as much as possible).
Pain Medication: I will take pain medication if my doctor says its okay. With my first delivery I was against getting any medication, but after a 15 hour labour journey I did ask for an epidural, and I do not regret it, not one bit.
During Delivery
Vaginal Birth: I am planning to give birth naturally and not through a C-section.
Tearing: I would like to have an episiotomy rather than tearing if needed during the birth of my baby.
Skin To Skin: I want to have skin to skin with my baby as soon as he is born, before he is taken to be weighed, and not removed from my arms until I give him to the nurse.
Cord Clamping: I would like to delay the cord clamping of my baby to ensure he gets all the nutrients possible from the umbilical cord.
Baby Care: I do not want my baby to be washed directly after birth and just wiped with a dry towel. I would like to delay the bathing of my baby to at least 10 - 12 hours after birth.
After Birth
Baby Feeding: I am looking to breastfeed my baby and because of that decision, I want to be able to breastfeed my baby within the first hour after birth. I do not want my baby to be bottle fed even if my milk hasn’t come in, unless recommended for medical reasons.
Rooming: Since I am choosing to breastfeed my baby, I am looking to have him in the room with me all the times, unless he is taken for checkups.
Guest Visits: I am completely fine with guests coming to the room and will be expecting family members from my husband as well as my side to visit us during our stay in the hospital.
Hospital Stay: I am choosing to give birth at Al Seef hospital and from what I understand (nothing guaranteed due to Covid-19/20) is that I will be there for 2 nights, and so I am packing with that in mind.
By no means is this list just the essentials, there are certain things that I am taking for comfort and personal preference.
